Stay calm, stay calm…

All in all, a great start to the season. Spurs let their fans down immediately as per usual while Manchester United and Chelsea suffered opposite starts.
Shay Given turned in the kind of performance we’ve come to expect from him and in the process almost certainly sealed an improved bid for Berbatov by Sir Alex. Chelsea were impressive, but as I wrote previously I think Portsmouth are in for a shock this season. They’ve hit that same area as Spurs where they’re good enough to inspire opposition teams to turn in a top performance against them but not good enough to do win anyway on a regular basis.
A perfect example was on show at the Riverside. Spurs had all their usual big spending summer but Gareth Southgate got his players geed up to take them down a notch. Spurs actually dominated play and their significant technical improvement was on show as Modric, Bentley and Dos Santos passed circles around Boro. The big problem I saw for them was the team now lacks willing runners in midfield for those playmakers to put through. They just passed it round and round without any incision. Jenas is athletic enough to be that runner but he was bogged down by defensive duties.
Manchester City and Everton were also less than impressive. Mark Hughes must be wondering what the heck he got himself into as his players, many of whom joined the club because of Sven, looked disinterested. He had a team molded in his image at Blackburn and now faces the opposite. I think a really rough season is in store especially if Thaksin gets screwed. The newly promoted sides looked shaky, which means that Fulham should be terrified.
I’m just so glad football is back on show. Been bored as tits lately without it that I’ve turned to hiding in bushes and scaring the homeless.
